Jimmy betrayed Dave, killing him in cold blood, for his desire for revenge was too strong for anyone to stop. The only problem was Dave was not the one responsible for Katie's murder making his retribution an act of crime and foolish action out of anguish. As Gandhi once said "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." however Jimmy was fortunate enough for Sean not to turn him into the police for he knew what he had done to Dave. Yes the murder was found, but Jimmy's retaliation was for nothing except more inflicted pain for another family. Showing to the audience even sometimes the protagonist in the movie gets the smaller end of the stick. Revenge in this movie caused a even greater conflict, with Dave's death: came a single mom, less income for the family, and a son without the fatherless figure. Ultimately the future will be forever affected over a man's single action of revenge.

Mystic River Question 3
Jimmy betrayed Dave, killing him in cold blood, for his desire for revenge was too strong for anyone to stop. You are so right, and the accuracy of the Ghandi quote about "an eye for an eye" is relevant. Jimmy should have known better that it could have been anyone besides Dave, but it was a shame Dave was too suspect and just like you said - Jimmy was too emotional to think straight. Had his decision-making been good, like yours for example, he would've never killed or "whacked" Dave as they say up in Boston. Not everybody should play detective, because you can't "do it big" (wink, wink) without getting the facts first.
ReplyDeleteYour quote offers an accurate connection to one of the biggest themes explored in the film. As you said, Dave truly wasn't the one responsible for Katie's murder, yet Jimmy's "tragic flaw" of ruthless rage led him to ultimately seek revenge. As Jimmy sought "revenge" on Dave, Dave (to an extent) on both Jimmy and Sean (his friends having acted too late), and Sean on the necessity to remain "objective" in the murder case, each of the three main characters experiences some thoughts of revenge and are "blinded" in some way.
ReplyDeleteThe quote "an eye for an eye" is absolutely perfect for the plot of the movie. Though it is a shame that the wrong "eye" was targeted by Jimmy after he lost one of his "eyes". After killing Dave to avenge his daughter and realizing he killed the wrong person, he felt as though he wasn't entitled to having any eyes. Which is why he had hoped an on-coming car would strike and kill him as he was walking down the street after realizing what he had done.
ReplyDeleteThe quote you used portrays the stories main theme accurately. Jimmy's motives to kill the person that killed his beloved daughter leaves him to take matters into his own hands by avenging her death. But in the process he is left "blind" after killing the wrong person and feeling guilty. Thus concluding that killing one person for the death of another is only going to leave people blind to the real problem and proper solution.
